2/10 - 2/13 Honolulu to Stockholm
The redeye from Honolulu to Seattle was uneventful although my initial impressions of NWA were positive. . check in, baggage, seating, flight attendants, etc. Maybe I’ve just been flying Delta and UA too long.
Arriving in Seattle at 545a, I took the bus into town where I met my sister at the Westin. We then went to breakfast in Belltown (Seattle) at Minnie’s. I highly recommend this place to you. I had a fruit baby. Think Dutch Baby with high “walls” allowing for a soup bowl effect – fill that with baked in their juices, sliced cinnamon apples and you have a fruit baby. It was the second best I’ve ever had of that sort of breakfast – the best being a baked apple baby in Amish Country, PA.
We spent Saturday and Sunday doing last minute this and that’s – and the mandatory stop for the best clams and chowder in the world – Ivar’s – on Saturday night. Few things seem to ever be as good as you remember them but Ivar’s is the exception! Wonderful. After the chowder, clams, cod and prawns I was all of a sudden tired….very tired.
On Sunday it was off to the airport via limo pickup at 330p. After checking in we settled in at the business class lounge (part of the Volvo program) for snax and beer, etc. At about 620 we boarded SAS 938 for an ontime departure at 650p and a scheduled arrival in Copenhagen at 125p. We then leave at 415p on SAS to Stockholm where we will be met by SAS Radisson and taken by limo to the hotel, all by about 6p…..for three nights….again, all part of the Volvo program.
I’ve rarely seen my sister so excited – she has been bubbly and on such a high – she told the limo driver, the checkin agents, and the business class attendants – actually anyone who will listen, that she is going to pick up her brand new blue Volvo at the factory!
At this time, we are just south of the Queen Elizabeth Islands (Canada) - about 3 hours out of Seattle and about 6 hours from arrival. I was able to get on the internet and chat with Stella for about an hour. I really do like SAS….we’re on an Airbus 340, nice. We had salmon and a salad and fresh rolls - as well as carrot cake (I had to pass).
The flight into Copenhagen, once i could get my eyes to work after a night of tossing and scrunching in my two seats, was beautiful - pure white - snow and mountains (not like the Rockies, but more of a high plateau with peaks scattered throughout. From up high it seemed as tho you could snowmobile the whole area. The endless snowscape was enhanced with frozen lakes and fjords. We were greeted in the early morning with a sudden bolt of white light right upon my eyes as the sterile SAS flight attendents started their torture routine. Once awake, tho, we got black cherry yogurt, coffee (and for an airplace, it was really good), orange juice and a 3 decker sandwich. The inflight map program was now useful, in the daylight the down and forward views were interesting to watch.
Normal advertising in the airport was really sort of racy - displays that went beyond Victoria's Secret - the electronics store had all the latest gadgets, games and movies - including XXX....right there in the open, so to speak....so I browsed a little, ever eager to enhance my cultural understanding.
I slept the whole way, about an hour, from Copenhagen to Stockholm. When we went outside to get our cab I was fully unprepared for the arctic blast that ravaged my parka encassed person.
After checking in and looking out the window at the full moon

and our view of Central Station from the SAS Radisson Royal Viking, we went out with the intent of walking over to Gamla Stan, the old town. We got as far as the first bridge when we decided a strategic retreat to the warmth of the hotel was in order...

we would explore tomorrow. So, with that, 1010pm, Feb 13, I will close this segment.
